Mozilla Minefield Leaves Google Chrome In The Dust
Minefield appears to be the future of Google Firefox, and from reports, it’s lightning fast.
Right now Google Chrome’s JavaScript engine performance beats the current stable version of Firefox, but it is left in the dust with what a group in Denmark created.
The new Minefield JavaScript is most likely going to be implemented into Firefox 3.1 since it is already in the nightly builds of Firefox.
Arstechnica.com writes about their encounter with Minefield, http://arstechnica.com/journals/linux.ars/2008/09/03/new-firefox-javascript-engine-is-faster-than-chromes-v8.
Cnet.com also talks about Minefield – http://news.cnet.com/8301-13505_3-10073252-16.html.
You can test out Minefield by downloading the Alpha code – http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/nightly/latest-trunk/
I really respect Mozilla for continuing to innovate while other companies enter the market and try to take market share away from them.
What I wonder is what is Microsoft doing in the midst of all this news? Sometimes I feel they aren’t even playing defense. Google brings in new muscle, and a set of eyes to a market they monopolize, which is very bad news for Microsoft. They can’t just squash out a powerhouse like Google, this isn’t the “Good Ole” days when Microsoft could do whatever they pleased and still succeed.
They need to keep up; otherwise they will soon be giving up the market to the son of Netscape Navigator, and the open source community.
