Website analyzation is key for a Search Engine Marketing Specialist. The ability to look at a website and figure out whether it has potential or not for your services is the first fundamental step in moving forward on a SEO project. I have created a step by step process on how to analyze a website.
1) First thing you should do is to analyze the backlinks.
a. When you get the amount of backlinks, provided by Yahoo, document this number. Is it low or high compared to the quality/age of the site?
b. If you have the amount of backlinks from weeks prior you can analyze your progress/digress, and try to figure out how these numbers came to be.
2) Rank
a. Google and Alexa
i. Google Page rank
1. Usually the bar on either the top or bottom of your browser (depending on
which one you use) thereat is a horizontal row filled in with green up to a
certain point. If you put your cursor over it, it will tell you a pagerank from
0-10.
2. The higher the number, the better overall your page is in the eyes of Google.
ii. Alexa Rank
1. Alexa Rank is a website traffic comparison tool. You can get the stats of
you’re the incoming traffic to your website. You can even compare it to
your competitors.
2. You can see where you are, so that you can determine where you should be
in a given amount of time
3) Analyze Source Code
a. There are a few things that should be done when looking at the actual site
being analyzed. These things can be achieved by viewing the source code
i. First check if the titles of the webpagesweb pages are optimized. If the
title begins with the title of the company, then optimization has yet to be
done. If the title directly says what the page is going to entail, then optimization
has been underway.
ii. Also, make sure the keywords are optimized. If they keywords are not relevant,
do not contain keywords in the content of the page, nor is it an extensive well
thought out list then optimization has not gone underway.
These are just a few tips on ways to analyze a website prior to optimization.
These are not the only factors in analyzing the potential of the site. How is
the content of the site? What is the industry? What is the goal of the site
(ecommerce, informative, news)? Is there presence in social media (digg, facebook,
twitter, myspace, ect)? Does the site have ahave a blog.blog? These are all
factors that we look into when reviewing potential clients. Of course, if you
have any questions feel free to contact us.
