Google, Yahoo, MSN. These are all search engines that we have used at some point in our web-lives. In my experience, Yahoo used to be a major player in the Search Engine industry. I remember the day when I converted to Google; we all probably have a similar story. I was about in 8th grade; I was doing research for a project and was searching for something using Yahoo. My aunt came in the room and told me to use Google. Like anyone hearing the word “Google” I was perplexed, but she was a Berkley Grad so I saw her with some credibility. She told me that it gave smarter and better search results. Since that day I don’t think that I have used Yahoo to search anything since.
Speaking with friends, colleagues, and family, everyone who I’ve asked hasn’t used Yahoo since Google came into their lives. What has made Google so dominant? Google spread mainly through word of mouth. Yahoo has had numerous television and radio ads, with their popular slogan “Do You Yahoo?” but yet Google remained on top despite not advertising themselves within the same media. Google is not only the most used search engine, but it is the site that is most commonly home paged, and has developed itself into an all encompassing super network of products and tools that is growing faster than the expansion rate of the universe.
Now with the Google network, Google analytics, Adwords, images, docs, and etc, Google is the leader in many different facets of the internet. Not only did it make Yahoo somewhat irrelevant, but I doubt kids growing up now will ever even know that MSN was even a search engine. I highly doubt that Yahoo will be able to remain competitive, and when Google runs the world, remember where you heard it first
