Those of you familiar with Optimum7 are well aware how intense we are about CONTENT towards achieving top SEO performance levels. This is because we cannot emphasize it enough; whether it is your website content, that is, your content that you see on your home page and all of the web pages that constitute opportunities for human interaction OR the follow-on, continuous and endless stream of content necessary for long term success, and even dominance, on Google.
The “game” is all about winning online. A well designed website is clearly important as you want the visitor to engage, interact and ultimately perform the conversion act to buy something, follow through with a phone inquiry, online form or subscribe to a service, newsletter, etc. However, no matter how nice or even effective your website may be, it is nothing more than a static online brochure for people who already know you if you are not easily found on the search engines and the social media online.
Many SEO Companies will speak about on site elements such as coding, meta data, title tags, site maps, etc. Many will do a good job at it. However, many of their clients don’t see results in terms of increased traffic and conversions. So, if this doesn’t result in traffic what does and why?
With almost 100% certainty, your business, cause or purpose online involves at least moderate to very competitive keywords. How can Google differentiate between these websites for every single keyword entered by a searcher? It will always come down to content; content is the fuel, the fodder Google uses to generate relevant results for its users. Here’s how:
1. Indexing – Google is watching what you do on your website. Websites that are actively publishing new content on their website in many forms, such as articles, press releases, videos, podcasts, et al prompts Google to come and crawl the site to index the content. The ones that generate the greatest activity are creating a competitive advantage for relevant keywords.
2. Backlinks – It is not just your website that Google is scanning to evaluate your website relevance. Google also wants to know which websites are linking to you and why. Websites that link to you are considered a “vote of confidence” particularly if the Backlink is both naturally occurring and highly relevant. Content again is the fuel needed to generate backlinks. As with indexing on your site, the active syndication of your content external to your site but linking to your site is a key element in generating the highest quality backlinks.
3. Social Media – social bookmarking sites such as Digg, StumbleUpon, Delicious and dozens more are completely dependent on content as the online social community registered with these portals is bookmarking for those interested in the content that they find the most interesting and /or relevant to their common interests. This can generate loads of referral traffic directly from these social sources AND is actively monitored by Google and incorporated into their ranking system. This can create a virtuous cycle of increased popularity and traffic as the social bookmarking sites increase Google Activity and higher rankings create more votes (bookmarks) in the social bookmarking sites … pretty powerful stuff!
Likewise, Twitter, Facebook, Linked-In and many other social media sites are driven by only content and nothing else. If your content is weak, in either/both quality or quantity, your results online will be weak. Twitter is an excellent example. If you post “I just washed my car” who cares? But, if you are selling tickets online through your website, have established a following and post a “tiny url” link to get tickets for the newly announced Carlos Santana concert, you can count on a ton of traffic.
Social Media, in brief, is about being there and staying involved and contributing useful stuff to the social community … and, at all times, Google is watching this activity.
The Content Game is about generating, implementing and syndicating the most relevant content. Those that do the best job on a constant basis are the ones who are getting the most visibility and the most traffic. Then, the content and the design of your content on your site take over to foster conversions, sales and bottom line profits and ROI.
