Security Implications of Social Media

We usually focus on the positives that social media can bring about, but right now we are going to hop to the other side of the fence for a bit and discuss some of the dangers that can arise via social media. Not too long ago, I was called out at work for something that was posted on my Facebook. It wasn’t anything offensive, just one of my friends happened to go on my profile while I was logged in, and put an unsettling status about me, which made my friends think that I put it about myself. Sure, it was all fun and games to my social circle, but when things like this get brought up at your place of business, it makes one think about the effects that social media can have on one’s life, safety, security, perceived character, and well being.

Yahoo and Bing Teaming up Against Google

In a move to take some of the momentum away from Google, Microsoft has re-entered their negations with Yahoo. It could potentially “give Microsoft roughly 30 percent share of the online search market.” (AdAge, http://adage.com/digital/article?article_id=138138). For those of us in the search industry, this is some very significant news. What does this mean to internet marketing? and Will we have to make added effort in diversifying our PPC accounts? More importantly, will we no longer only worry about how visible we are in the eyes of Google?

Creative Ways to Use Twitter for Business

Funny as it is, the idea from this blog was spawned by a question asked to me by my mother. She is a real-estate agent in Los Angeles, and asked me if she should use Twitter to help grow her business. Without hesitation I said, “Of Course!” There are many ways that business owners and those who are self-employed can use the power of Twitter to their advantage. Twitter provides us with a near limitless platform to reach people in real time; it is really unlike anything out there. From real estate agents, food vendors, book stores, to any business that provides products or services; Twitter can grant you access to a large number of potential customers who already have the intent to spend.

Why Branding is Important – Bruno vs. Harry Potter

Last Friday Sacha Baron Cohen’s new movie Bruno came out and topped box offices with a whopping $30.4 Million, only to see diminishing returns for the remainder of the weekend. It is unusual that a movie begins to drop just the day after, but in Bruno’s case it did. The newest installment of the Harry Potter series opened this past Wednesday with an unheard of $104 million worldwide, with more people expected to see it this coming weekend. Despite Bruno not having great success after its opening day compared to Harry Potter’s unrivaled success, both of these movies have one glaring commonality; both of these film’s online reviews were negative.

5 Reasons to Get the New iPhone 3Gs

My phone has been acting up lately. I don’t have a Smartphone, but desperately need to get one. I am stuck with a Samsung tailored to Metro PCS, and not a very good one at that. You can’t really beat the unlimited service and amazing prices, but I think it’s time for a change. I have stuck to my guns long enough now. I use to think that the phone craze would die out so I neglected to spend big on a cell phone. This was probably due to the fact that I am sort of anti-trend, and that my average phone life was less than 3 months. In spite of all this, I am extremely tempted to get the new iPhone 3Gs.

How to Use #Trending Topics for Marketing

Twitter’s trending topics are the top ten keywords that are being tweeted at that time. Recently MJ has been a leading trending topic. The trending topics range from anything that has been in current events such as #iranelections, to #hashtag keywords that people create to start a twitter-wide conversation with topics such as #truth or #lies. Not all trending topics are #hastags, for example, the few non #hashtag trending topics right now are Chuck Norris, Michael Jackson, Harry Potter, Pirates, Sotomayor, and Bruno. Side Note: Hashtags are tags preceded by the “#” symbol and are generally used by Tweeps who wish to follow what is being said about a particular subject whether or not you are actually following the Tweeps.

CNN Using Twitter to Report News in Iran

The traditional media, CNN for one, had great difficulty getting reliable news subsequent to the controversial elections in Iran. So when major and tumultuous political and social events occur in a tightly controlled and restricted society, what is a major media outlet to do when they can’t get any of their journalists on the scene? Enter: Social Media

The Search Engine Wars … Google, Yahoo and MSN

Google, Yahoo, MSN. These are all search engines that we have used at some point in our web-lives. In my experience, Yahoo used to be a major player in the Search Engine industry. I remember the day when I converted to Google; we all probably have a similar story. I was about in 8th grade; I was doing research for a project and was searching for something using Yahoo. My aunt came in the room and told me to use Google. Like anyone hearing the word "Google" I was perplexed, but she was a Berkley Grad so I saw her with some credibility. She told me that it gave smarter and better search results. Since that day I don't think that I have used Yahoo to search anything since.
