SXSW 2010: Why I HAVE to Go Next Year, SXSW 2011

South by Southwest (SXSW) is a series of interactive, film, and music festivals and conferences that happens every spring in Austin, Texas. Centered in downtown Austin’s Convention Center, it began in 1987. Each section runs mainly independent of each other with various start dates.

Twitter’s New @Anywhere Platform

While many of us were waiting to see how Twitter would implement their new advertising platform, it seems Twitter had something else in mind first. Twitter announced at SXSW that they will be launching a new platform called @anywhere. The idea is to take the Twitter experience and allow it to be implemented anywhere on the web. As Twitter states it in their blog, “Soon, sites many of us visit every day will be able to recreate these open, engaging interactions providing a new layer of value for visitors without sending them to Twitter.com.”

Is TV Going to Die at Some Point… because of Apple?

I can spend hours in front of a TV. I prefer watching TV on a big screen, sitting at a comfortable distance rather than on my 15 inch laptop screen, in my face and on my lap. But no matter how I enjoy watching TV, I can’t help but get this recurrent feeling that in the coming years TV will be replaced with some sort of Internet-based system.

Apple’s App Store Purge: App Ban Round 2

It seems that Droid’s and Verizon’s attacks on the iPhone, citing the multitude of useless apps, and lack of certain functionalities has lead to a reaction by Apple to take charge and clean up their cluttered app-store.

Why Hulu Fees Will Bring Its Collapse

Last week I talked about Walmart purchasing Vudu, and why this was a smart move for them. This week AP Business Writer Deborah Yao wrote an article suggesting that Hulu very well may be charging for its content very soon. As opposed to Walmart, this is not a good move when it comes to the consumer.

KGB vs. Google: Why the Winner is Obvious!

I’m sure we’ve all been out and about and have either been asked a question or inquired about something that we needed to get a quick answer to. Thanks to these revolutionary smart phones we don’t have to call 10 of our friends/family to find the answer, nor do we have to run down to the nearest library in the advent that no one knows the answer. We can simply look to our useful Smartphone (the word useful is used loosely here depending on the phone you currently have) and find the answer we need through a choice of methods, including a quick Google search or through a service known as KGB.

Is Twitter Everything Twitter Needs?

Alex Payne, Lead for the API team at Twitter, sent out a Tweet hinting at new features that may render Twitter third-party clients useless. This led me to wonder… why hasn’t Twitter been able to self-sufficiently maintain a user-friendly interface? It seems like I end up using third-party clients like TweetDeck and Seesmic more often [...]

Video on Demand: Walmart Buys Vudu

Although I can list many reasons why shopping at Walmart is horrible, I have to admit that Walmart’s recent move to purchase Vudu—a video on demand Web service—is very smart. This seemingly random move puts Walmart into yet another money making category for competitors to envy. I’ll leave the antics of why you should avoid [...]

Changing the Landscape for Computing: Gesture-Based Interfaces

In the beginning of the year I looked back on the last decade and many of the major milestones we’ve reached in regards to new and innovative technology. I also said that although I see major improvements to the technology we use today, I don’t see anything as major as we did in the last [...]

Reminder: Google’s Main Focus is Search!

It seems that with all the hoopla of Google’s latest ventures (i.e. Google Buzz, Google Wave, and the various other new application and updates) we tend to forget what Google’s focal point is… SEARCH! But with all the extra add-ons and applications I don’t think Google has forgotten its strongest seller and are still trying [...]
