Michael Jackson’s Memorial was a Social Event
MJ has passed but he’s alive and well on Twitter where I have noticed that people have opened accounts bearing Michaels name and use his picture on their profile picture. Some examples are @MichaelJFan2, and @jacksonTwit. It’s not a surprise that some of the current trending topics on Twitter today are Michael Jackson, Rip MJ; MJ’s and even his daughter Paris. Everyone has something to say about the memorial, about how the performances made them feel, and of course, his daughter’s heartfelt goodbye that touched everyone who watched. The amazing thing about Twitter is that the messages are in all different languages and people around the world are finding this one topic in common which is reminiscent of MJ’s goal to bring people closer through his music and amongst other charitable efforts.
In Digg.com fashion, I’ve noticed a very limited amount of Michael Jackson stories which I’m pretty sure Digg has tried to control. Digg.com has a social environment that has increasingly become more and more pretentious so I am not surprised at all. So far I have seen a story regarding people trading MJ memorial service tickets for sex and stories that mock the memorial service and the performances. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, so if you have things in perspective and feel that there should not be such a big deal about MJ, digg.com is great site to read up on the event. You won’t have a problem socializing and meeting new friends there.
Jimmy Fallon is the youngest newcomer to the Late Night lineup and by far has been the most active in Twitter and social media with his own blog and team of bloggers. On his blog you could read a funny blog post showing how ticket holders were overwhelmingly pumped about going to a funeral. The post has pictures and captions that will surely induce an LOL.
One thing that hasn’t changed is MJ’s ability to make people react, whether positively or negatively. MJ makes people talk and because of the new ways to communicate on the web, people can talk about him whether it is good or bad on a variety of platforms. Impressive enough, MJ was able to sell countless records before the days of iTunes and before the internet evolved. It all makes me wonder what impact it would have if The Jackson 5 were just emerging on the scene today?
