Trending Topics on Twitter

Trending Topics on TwitterThis is a list of recent trending topics on Twitter. Ever wonder why they are number one? To be honest I don’t think I ever participated in one nor have I bothered to click on one. I decided to research the topics by visiting each “forum” and see what people are talking about and why.

Jay Z – The hip hop legend Jay Z has made the top of the trending topics list. Most people in this trending topic are Twittering lyrics from his songs. For those who are not familiar with Jay-Z, he is considered a distinguished hip hop heavy weight. His lyrics are powerful, real and timeless; there are no gimmicks just real shiz. He is the perfect mix of commercial without being commercial. He is successful and respected in both arenas. When quoting a hip hop artist, you will most likely choose words from the wise Jay-Z.

Miley Cyrus – She is a huge Disney Star (Hannah Montana). School is out for summer and pre-teens are at home twittering away. Clicking on this trend made me feel like I was back in the 7th grade. There is a popular quiz circling around from @LOLQuiz asking “Who is Your Disney Celebrity Sister”.  Tons of girls are at home taking this test and twittering their results. Give me a second while I get the bubblegum out of my hair.

Quando – Quando is a word used in the Spanish and Portuguese language. It means “When”. Apparently this word has been made popular due to another quiz circling around from @LOLQuiz called “Quando voce vai a morrer?” This translates to “When am I going to die?” I took the quiz and in order to take it, I had to sign up by automatically following @LOLQuiz…pretty clever. It said I was going to die on December 15, 2040 of natural causes…

Comic-Con – This trending topic is for my comic crazy geekazoids. Comic-Con is the world’s largest comic book convention and will begin tomorrow in San Diego. The tweets consists of people asking about tickets, what hotels are available, and even people landing at the airport in San Diego expressing their excitement. No Doubt this trend will probably continue through the days of the convention with updates and Twitpics.

Adam Laroche – This trending topic is filled with mostly sports enthusiasts and Red Sox fans. Adam Laroche is a first basemen for the Pittsburgh Pirates who is now being traded to the Boston Red Sox. Mostly people are expressing their excitement; others not so much. Some people are going as far as saying the move will allow him to become a hall of famer and others are wondering why the trade was made in the first place. I had no idea baseball fans were such conspiracy theorists.

Harry Potter – This one is easy. Harry Potter’s new movie is out and this topic is filled with people sharing their movie experiences. Many people are saying mostly positive things. There is also yet another quiz going around by @LOLquiz called “What Harry Potter Character are you”? Just in case you were wondering (you probably weren’t) I am Renus Lupi, my loyalty, bravery, and kindness are my strongest features.

AT&T – This trending topic is a good and bad thing for AT&T. Mostly people are Twittering about bad service, and waiting for repairmen to show up at their homes. Although the feedback is bad, this is actually good because AT&T should take notice and realize they are getting effortless, real time feedback for free. This is a lot better than asking already frustrated customers to take a survey on their experience after they have completed their call they were dreading to make in the first place. Also, people are talking about employment, people are twittering about applying for jobs. One woman mentioned she filled out a questionnaire with 250 questions. Yikes.  AT&T should get involved here like other businesses and respond to the complaints and suggestions on Twitter … show some concern and caring for their customers.

Selena Gomez – Again, I would like to throw in the tween factor, kids are out of school and Twittering in full force. Selena Gomez is another Disney Star who appears in her own show “The Wizards of Waverly Place.” This trending topic had more variety because there were also males in the mix. Today is Selena’s birthday and tons of fans are wishing her a happy birthday.

Google Wave – Google Wave is a new tool for communication and collaboration on the web, coming later this year. There is currently a lot of hype for the product. Some techs are Twittering about release dates but still there is no real information about Google Wave.

Sliimy – Who is Sliimy? Apparently he is a French singer who did a cover for Britney Spears’ Womanizer. Although, most updates are asking who Sliimy is. He or she is actually popular for people not knowing who he or she is.  How strange is that?

Unfortunately I saw many Twitter users trying to gain followers or create leads for stuff they are promoting by writing every single trending topic in their updates. This seems very spammy to me and in my opinion very desperate. I wouldn’t recommend using this tactic for internet marketing. It did a great job of turning me off completely. There are better ways to use trending topics for marketing.
