The GDP is Up, Job Market… Not So Much!

The GDP is Up, Job Market... Not So Much! The GDP is up but jobs are still not coming back; it may have a lot to do with perceptions of the consumers. I just noticed that the unemployment rate is now 10.2% … not good. I for one have changed my spending habits and although I’m hearing a lot of better news in regards to the economy I’m still quite reluctant to spend. Is it the same for everyone else; are consumers not comfortable spending?

When I got the news that I had been accepted to work for Optimum7 I was so excited, especially after spending an entire summer unemployed with a routine day-to-day job search with no leads. Mentally that begins to take a toll and you begin to question your qualifications.

I’ve learned a lot in regards to things I could’ve done differently during my job search, and for the future of my career. The key is not to stay focused on finding just any job, nor is it finding a very specific job. The key is finding a job that can expand what you’ve learned while giving you the ability to explore other fields you very well may be interested in working in for the rest of your life.

As an Alumnus of Florida International University(FIU) with a Communications B.S. in Public Relations (it feels great to say that so I say it when I get the chance to plug it in), I quickly learned through frustration and disappointment that life does not run on the same agenda that you print out in your head. There are many tweaks that have to be made.

I saw a job placement for Internet Marketing and I applied and now that I look at the bigger picture I realize that I can definitely see myself working in the Internet Marketing industry, and still be able to use a lot of the public relations skills that I’ve learned through my schooling (i.e. pitching, writing and overall being creative).

There has been a big change in the pr curriculum because of social media. Many schools offer a class on Twitter and one university even requires the class, not to mention the change in marketing strategies since the boom of social media. Many CEOs have joined twitter as a strategy to connect with their consumers. I note this because it shows that versatility can take you places in life.

I was able to find a great job in internet marketing, and I thoroughly enjoy it and I am interested to see where this field goes.  It’s funny because a few months ago, I had a very specific job set in mind and now the lines have been blurred between my initial thoughts on Search Engine Optimication (SEO) and public relations.

So, while you wait for the economy to fully-recover keep in mind that adapting to a harsh environment may go a long way in your future.

Don’t wait for your fate to be decided by others. If you think there is nothing you can do about this crisis, nothing could be further from the truth.
