URL Shortener Bit.ly Makes Bitly.TV

URL Shortener Bit.ly Makes Bitly.TVRecently, the very successful, two billion links a month, URL shortened Bit.ly launched a new website; Bitly.tv. Think of it as a video trending topic website.

The site lists all the videos that are being shortened on its bit.ly site and has a simplified visual list of these videos. If a video is clicked it, opens a player with a real-time view of Twitter feeds displaying users that use the shortened URL for that specific video along with their tweet.

Give it a try and see what happens! Considering that it was a trending topic, I’m sure you’ll be able to find the controversial clip of “Snookie” from MTV’s Jersey Shore getting punched, which was censored due to public backlash against the station for airing violence against women.

Bit.ly recently launched Bit.ly Pro which gives web publishers the ability to create and track their own shortened URL’s. TechCrunch’s Erick Schonfeld says, “Publishers also get an analytics dashboard which shows real-time stats like the total number of clicks, and their distribution by geography and referring sites. The data around URL shorteners is incredibly valuable, and even Facebook and Google are jumping into the game with goo.gl and fb.me.”

Mashable’s Benn Parr raises a good question when he says, “Bitly.tv makes sense, but we think this is only the first step. If Bit.ly can perfect the algorithms for videos, it certainly can do it for blogs and news articles. And because it utilizes link sharing over Diggs or “upvotes,” it may in fact be a more accurate tool for figuring out what’s hot on the web. We think this is just the beginning.”

Is it possible for Bit.ly to beat Google at real-time search and become a hot spot for breaking news? It’s definitely possible considering that Twitter News didn’t seem to take off; at least I haven’t heard much about it lately, although Google seems to have done a great job of seamlessly integrating this real-time search feature into their news search.

We’ll definitely have to keep an eye on how this develops in the coming months!
